Description
Umzimvubu Retreat Guest House is situated on densely forested dunes overlooking the majestic Umzimvubu River Mouth and mighty Indian Ocean on First Beach. We are within comfortable walking distance from the town center, various restaurants & bars.
This family run business has been operational for 9 years and we guarantee unmistakable South African hospitality … whether for a holiday, business trip or just passing by, we pledge satisfaction, value for money and fond memories. Experience the incredible scenic beauty of the Wild Coast.
Port St. Johns: Port St. Johns is situated halfway between East London and Durban, on the Wildcoast (Transkei). The coast of the old Transkei (now part of the Eastern Cape Province) is known as the Wildcoast.
Exploring the Wild Coast is a delight for the nomad. There are lagoons, cliffs, palm trees, arum lilies, sandy bays and rivers reaching the sea in deep valleys, many of them finding their way through the hills in incredibly involved convolutions. The road to any coastal point leads through unforgettable scenery, offering innumerable interesting glimpses of the way of life of a people living in a manner totally different from that of Europe or Asia.
Between Mount Thesiger and Mount Sullivan, the majestic Umzimvubu River flows and reaches the sea in a setting of tremendous cliffs densely covered in sub-tropical forest – it is here where you’ll find Port St. Johns!!!
Few people visit Port St. Johns without being captivated. It is an easy-going place where formal dress is unknown. There is little doubt that together with its surroundings, it is a Paradise, be it for the artist, photographer, naturalist, botanist, or for those just seeking peace and relaxation. It is a lovable, unspoilt “destination”, with no pretence of being anything else.
There are three superb beaches, several rocky headlands, boating up the river and many paths leading through the forest to scenic spots.
The climate is perfect for holidays all year round, with sea temperatures high enough for even mid-winter bathing. Fruit like banana, paw-paw, mango, litchi & avocado, which are grown in the river valley, are sold at roadside stalls.
Craft such as beadwork, baskets and walking sticks, made by locals are also available to purchase.
