Halfway between Cape Town and Durban on the N2 en route to the Wild Coast or Addo Elephant Park, Dreamers is the perfect relaxing stopover. We are just a few meters off the R63 and 4Km from Bhisho. These are beautiful traditional Victorian houses set in an attractive garden in the heart of historical King William’s Town. The friendly staff ensures a delightful stay.
Dreamers, a Victorian guesthouse built in 1887 and set in a lovely quiet and tranquil garden in the heart of historic King. We run a student community training project at Dreamers, so you will be in seriously hospitable hands.

There are twelve bedrooms equipped with all the modern commodities required for the leisure tourist or the weary traveller. Our rooms are typical of the Victorian style houses and they are all en-suite. We use Percale linen and we provide all the amenities required for a relaxing stay. The bedrooms are non-smoking and there is a large closed-in patio/smoking area.

“Dreamers” has a convivial dining/ living room where fires crackle in winter and superb cuisine is laid down for dinner. The various cooks have made it their life task to let our guests come back repeatedly for their dishes that make every taste bud work. A well-protected “braai”-area allows for informal catering for those who prefer to eat around a fire.

The house is furnished with many beautiful antique pieces originating from the ostrich feather era. There is also an 18th century organ and an excellent piano, if you feel the sudden urge to sing the Hippo, Huberta’s praises.

There are two large pools with lovely poolside patios for summer, one with a slip-and-slide for the younger and a patio with chaise lounges for the more relaxed visitor.

About the town:
KING WILLIAM’S TOWN TODAY

*The charming town of "King", steeped in history, is the capitol of the Eastern Cape. It was founded in 1835 when a British army unit set up a garrison at an old London Missionary society outpost and named it in honour of their king - William IV who was the successor of Queen Victoria. It was the scene of many skirmishers in the Frontier wars against the local indigenous tribes of the amaXhosa. It continues today to play a prominent role in the history of South Africa. It is the cradle of eminent leaders, who fought against the apartheid policies. Steve Biko is its most famous, who have started the black consciousness movement. The Steve Biko Garden of Remembrance, situated at the entrance to King on the road from Port Elizabeth, houses the graves of Steve Biko, the struggle activists Griffiths and Victoria Mxenge and the victims of the Bhisho Massacre.

The Amathole Museum is one of the points of interest on a walking tour of King William's Town. The tourist walks pass many old homes and buildings where their graciousness has not diminished over the years. There are many churches, the oldest the Holy Trinity Church (1850) and the Beautiful Grey Monument Hospital (1856) where tourist are shown the 50mm thick Teak doors made from timber salvaged from a ship, the Kennaway-Castle, which sunk off the coast near East London. The British Kaffrarian Bank (now Ned Bank) is the most beautiful of them all. Its decorated dome is a striking feature of the many interesting buildings.

The Amathole Museum contains the second largest selection of Mammal species in the Southern Hemisphere. Here Huberta the most Famous Hippopotamus can be seen. She made headlines worldwide from 1928 when she started her journey southwards from Natal. Three indiscriminate hunters shot her one day while she was bathing in the Keiskamma River in 1931. The museum houses Exhibits on the history of the town, the 19th century German settlers and colourful detail of the Xhosa culture. Within easy reach, there are several cultural villages, which can be visited to experience the ambience present in the communities of these friendly people.

Visit the Steve Biko Foundation and Memorial. His home is situated in Ginsburg and bears the Photos of many a trauma that took place in King during the years of the struggle.

Drive up Maitland Road towards Bhisho to witness the road people walked in a mass action against the existence of the Ciskeien Government.

Along the rolling slopes of the Amathole Mountains is one of South Africa's longest hikes, which covers an extensive distance between the Maden Dam and the Hogsback Mountains. It offers spectacular views of the indigenous forests waterfalls and grassy planes.

Just 40 km outside King lays the Double Drift Game Reserve, an unspoilt Malaria-free haven of beauty with abundance of game, where the visitor is guaranteed total peace and relaxation in Self-service Rest Camps.

Well-established schools, tertiary colleges and campuses of UPE and Fort Hare service the town. The latter University being the Alma mater of Nelson Mandela.
