INFORMATION AND PLACES OF INTEREST NEARBY :
Rivonia is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa, in the Sandton area. Rivonia is one of the most affluent residential and business suburbs of Johannesburg. The main retail thoroughfare in the area is The Boulevard. Many shops and restaurants are located here, and although some extremely important historical sites are nearby, in Rivonia itself is one of the most politically important buildings in Gauteng – Lilliesleaf Farm.
* Lilliesleaf Farm:
Although the bustling suburb of Rivonia has since grown up around the old Lilliesleaf farm house, in the early 1960’s it was an isolated farm location, and proved perfect for a time for banned members of the ANC to hide out from the ubiquitous and highly efficient police and security services. It was also a meeting place for most of the luminaries of the struggle, and many of the defining policies that ultimately saw the overthrow of apartheid were devised on the Farm. The ultimate infiltration into the Farm in 1963 and arrest of most of the leadership of the Umkhonto we Sizwe, the fighting arm of the people, led to what became known as The Rivonia Trial. The trial started in October 1963 in Pretoria and eight of the accused which included Nelson Mandela, were sentenced to life imprisonment. They had escaped the death penalty, almost certainly,because of Mandela’s statement from the dock on the last day of the trial with an exposition of his personal standpoint, which ended ‘during my lifetime I have dedicated myself to the struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die’. A 5 minute walk from Chislehurst.
